Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC).A subset of 22 toddlers concurrently enrolled in the Home-Based Preschool Program also receives an extra 20 hours per week of center-based care. In partnership with Neighborhood House, Guadalupe rents space to house this unique early intervention and enrichment program.
Children, ranging in age from 1-3 years old, attend ECEC Monday through Thursday. This enrichment program is language intensive supporting children who do not speak English, as well as those who do speak English in the home but need an extra boost in language development.
The teacher/student ratio is 1:3, which is the key to the success of the program. The coordinator, who also teaches, has a degree in Psychology and a Child Development Associates (CDA). The five educators have a strong background in child education and are working towards getting a CDA. Three of the staff are bilingual and all activities are done in Spanish and English.
Parent involvement is an important part of the program. Families begin the year with a home visit with the ECEC Educators. Parents volunteer in the ECEC a minimum of six times a year and participate in ten family gatherings.
The educators create a child-centered environment where children learn through play and language is learned through constant conversation, stories, finger plays and crafts.
The success of ECEC is shown through a variety of ways. The latest twelve graduates of ECEC scored 41% above the chronological age on the receptive/concept language portion of the Bracken assessment. 90% of ECEC children scored in the normal range of development on the Ages & Stages assessments. One parent says "I think that the teachers make great impact on my child and me. They always have great brochures to help me to be a better parent and always have great advice for us to try at home. Thank you teachers for teaching me to be a better teacher to my child"
